Virtual
Nameservers
For the
dedicated reseller, Virtual Nameservers provide the Reseller with a
means to keep Visual Presence more transparent to clients.
WHOIS
Records and Domain Names
If you use our nameservers on your domain record, a WHOIS search will
bring up our information: ns & ns2.visualpresence2000.com. If you
have your own nameservers, the same search will bring up ns & ns2.yournameservers.com.
Some Resellers
prefer not to have any of our information show up to their clients and
would rather see a nameserver such as ns.resellerdomain.com in the record.
If this is the case, you may request your own virtual name servers.
(Remember, you can request virtual name servers
at any time if you change your mind later.)
VP Becomes
Transparent to Your Clients
Generally clients of Resellers do not conduct thorough searches on where
their sites are hosted. If they rely on WHOIS records, an initial search
keeps Visual Presence behind the scenes. However, extensive traceroutes
and searches can be done that make Visual Presence visible. Generally
this is not a problem. Resellers may simply notify their clients that
Visual Presence provides them with network connectivity, yet the Reseller
is still their hosting service.
Although
there is no site posted on the domain name, www.visualpresence2000.com,
a person can use traceroutes and WHOIS records to find our main web
site. Because some clients prefer not to hold accounts with Resellers,
having virtual nameservers is an option of which many serious Resellers
take advantage.

What
are step-by-step instructions to get started?
- Request
that name servers be setup for your domain.
- Register
the nameservers with the organization that sold the domain (Enom, BulkRegister.com, etc.)
- Ping
the nameservers to check that they are active.
- Make
changes to the domain record to reflect your
nameservers.
Do
I need Virtual Nameservers?
If you are a serious reseller, you probably want to have your own nameservers
so that you appear to be a larger company and not a reseller.
How
will my resold accounts be affected if I add my own nameservers?
Your resold accounts will not be affected when your nameservers are
added. Your clients will still be able to access their accounts, as
the only change that is being done is a modification of the nameserver
record for their domain.
How
do I create my own nameservers?
Visual Presence technicians will create your name servers for you. Absolutely FREE!
The process will take approximately 1 hour complete. If you want
a different domain name, now is the time to input that information.
Can
I select the names for my nameservers?
You can select any domain that you wish to have as your own nameservers.
If you need to register a new name, please make sure to register the
domain first. By default, the Virtual nameserver table will put in your
Reseller domain name for the nameservers, such as ns.resellerdomain.com
and ns2.resellerdomain.com. One example of when a different domain for
the nameservers would be preferred, is if your reseller domain (the
one that has the reseller plan) is one of your client or personal domains.
After
Visual Presence installs my nameservers, how do I make them active?
Once they have been created, the nameservers must be registered. If
VP registered your domain for you, please submit a Service Request and
we can register the nameservers for you. Please allow 2-3 days for them
to become active.
If your
domain was registered (purchased) through another registrar, including
international domains, you must contact them to have your nameservers
registered.
How
do I register my nameservers with another registrar?
Each registrar has their own process to setup nameservers. Typically
when you edit the domain record you will see a link to establish nameservers
For help setting up
nameservers contact our tech support through the chat or help desk for information. Be sure to provide the
registrar you are using. Typical information needed to setup nameservers includes:
1) Email
Address (use the Administrative Contact email address you used when
you registered the original domain)
3) Host
Name (type in the name of your primary nameserver such as: ns.yourdomain.com)
4) IP
Address (type in the IP address of your primary nameserver)
5) NIC
Handle (use the Administrative NIC handle you were given when you
registered the original domain) Since you are using a NIC handle you
do not need to fill in the rest of the fields.
7) Repeat
the process for your NS2 (secondary nameserver) and be sure to use
the IP address that VP assigned to your NS2.
What
do I need to do to allow my resold accounts to use my VNS?
Submit a request to support with a list of the domains you would like
changed to use your VNS. Make sure to follow this up
with changing the domain record at the registrar to reflect your nameservers.
When
can I move my resold accounts to my new nameservers?
You can move your resold accounts to point to the nameservers once they
have been successfully registered. You can tell if your nameservers
are registered by executing a successful ping, trace route or by checking
in the WHOIS database of the registrar, if applicable.
How
do I make changes to the domain name record?
To make changes to any of the domains that you manage:
For Enom accounts Login to your account.
For BulkRegister accounts submit a help ticket through our help desk and request access to your bulk register accounts.
We will reply with a link to and instructions to follow.
How
do I upgrade to use Virtual Nameservers?
If you are a current customer and wish to have your own VNS,
submit a Service Request to the Help Desk. Your VNS table will be available
within the hour.
How
can I remove my VNS?
If you currently have your own nameservers and you wish to remove them,
Submit a Service
Request in the Help Desk asking to remove the VNS. Provide a list of domains you
wish to have removed. You will want to make sure that
your clients are not using your nameservers with us before you do this.
Can
my reseller domain use my nameservers?
Any domain that you host can use your nameservers, which includes your
Reseller domain.
How
do I ping my nameservers?
There are several ways to ping a domain or nameserver. If you don't
have an application that will do this for you, the MS-DOS prompt can
provide you with an easy way to do a ping or traceroute. While in Windows,
go to Start, Run, and type in command. This will open the MS-DOS window;
note this is not the same as restarting your computer in DOS mode. Once
in the window, type in "cd\" (without quotes) and hit enter,
then type in "ping ns.nameserver.com" (without quotes) and
hit enter. You can also ping the IP address and domains this way, as
well as doing traceroutes (for example, c:> tracert domain.com).
Once a ping is successfully completed on your nameservers, they are
available for use.
